Laura Mulvey discusses the idea representation of woman in society and how music videos depict this. Mulvey suggests that due to the sexual inequality enforced in society, it is seen as acceptable for males to actively look at females lustfully whilst females have a passive role. This idea of the male gaze has been exhibited explicitly through music videos. In these music videos we expect females to be shown through the perception of males. Females are sexualised and objectified through camerawork and the clothing aspect of mise en scene. When females are shown as subjects of a man's point of view, I'd expect them to be dressed in short tight dresses, bikinis and basically in little clothing. Also, the camera would shoot close ups or extreme close ups of only parts of their bodies such as their legs, breasts, bums and etc to objectify the females. Pop, grime and RnB videos are prime examples of delivering music videos through the perception of males.
An example of this a video by Flo Rida - Whistle.
This video is shown through the male gaze as women are shown as sexually and as objects to males. All the females in this video either wore little bikinis by the beach or short tight dresses in the party. This clearly supports Mulvey's idea of representation of women. The editing in this video, however, is very effective as many techniques have been used such as split screens, wipes and transitions. There was one shot where there was a split screen of three girls shown. I think this really highlights the idea o female representation.
