Research - Vernallis Theory

Carol Vernallis
Vernallis's studied editing and camera work. Through her studies, she found that the common rules of continuity editing are broken to ensure that the main focus is on the performance of the music video. She also establised that edits may be noticeable to bring attention to the performer e.g. wipes, special effects and jump cuts. Base tracks which are also known as a master shot is commonly used to form a structure for the music video. Lastly, the camera may move in time with the music.

Cheryl Cole - Fight For This Love includes an example of the camera moving in time with the music and the use of special effects as well as base track.

Angel - Wonderful illustrates the use of heavy special effects (Lights, colour, and flashes etc), base tracks and the camera moves with the music (slow motion).

Ben Howard - Only Love involves special effects (blurs, saturation), use of base tracks and jump cuts (shot from the bike handle followed by the man setting off on the bike).
